GCE and Volunteer Programme Coordinator

SERVE are recruiting for an enthusiastic and skilled Global Citizenship Education (GCE) & Volunteer Programme Coordinator to restart our overseas volunteer and immersion programmes, as well as continue to strengthen and promote global citizenship education and the SDGs to provide a platform for people to become agents of change – both globally and locally.

  • Job Title: GCE and Volunteer Programme Coordinator
  • Position Contract: 12 Month Fixed Term, Full Time
  • Hours of work: 40 hours per week
  • Region/ Location: Scala, Blackrock Cork. Hybrid work allowed, within reason.

SERVE is seeking an enthusiastic and skilled Global Citizenship Education (GCE) & Volunteer Programme Coordinator to restart our overseas Volunteer and Immersion programmes, as well as continue to strengthen and promote GCE and the SDGs to empower people to be agents of change.

With travel possible again, SERVE is pioneering a slightly different version of its traditional Volunteer and Immersion Programmes, by incorporating more GCE aspects into them and building a more wholesome learning experience for volunteers.

SERVE believes that volunteering and GCE goes hand in hand and through innovative and educational programmes, we can influence people locally and make a positive impact globally.

These programmes also highlight the positive impact of SERVE’s Development Programmes and the work we do with our partners in communities in the Global South.

Our volunteer programmes will be more inclusive by offering different volunteer options. It is open to those who want to travel, as well as those who would prefer not to travel, but still want to learn the importance of SERVE’s work and how they can be confident about their role in our interdependent globalised world.

This role will be responsible for running these programmes from start to finish with key duties such as administration, programme planning, volunteer recruitment, GCE workshop and group facilitation, coordinate training seminars, event management, group travel coordination, relationship building with volunteers and external stakeholders (community groups, schools and third level education institutes), debriefing and evaluating, as well as retaining volunteers to stay involved with SERVE when their programme finishes.

You must be able to work evenings and weekends to suit volunteers, work autonomously and as part of the small but dynamic SERVE team based in Cork City.

Flexibility and the ability to work on multiple programmes is required in what can be a demanding role. A hard-working and passionate individual will thrive while gaining valuable experience and will have various learning opportunities to realise and grow your potential.

Full, clean driving license is essential.

Skills and experience needed:


  • A recognised qualification in either GCE, International Development, Education or Youth work.
  • Relevant work experience will also be considered.
  • Working knowledge of International Development and SERVE’s mission and values.
  • Knowledge of Global Citizenship Education and global issues. 
  • Previous volunteer experience in Ireland or overseas would be an asset.
  • Understanding of best practice in running volunteer programmes.


  • Knowledge and experience of global citizenship and development education or other relevant area (e.g., social justice, anti-racism education, education for sustainable development goals, human rights education, inter-cultural education etc.)
  • Experience in engaging audiences, especially young people, in a creative and informative way to enhance the learning experience.
  • Overseas volunteer experience is preferred, but not essential.
  • Community volunteer experience is desirable.
  • Experience in relation to recruitment, training, and supervision of groups of people.
  • Relevant experience of training, presentation, and group facilitation.


  • Excellent group facilitation and organisational skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills that connects easily with people. 
  • Professional manner. 
  • Confident at calling people instead of only emailing/ messaging. 
  • Proficient IT and organised administration skills.
  • Ability to recognise opportunities and examine the viability of them.
  • Proposal or grant writing skills would be advantageous.
  • A self-starter with ability to work on own initiative and be a team player.
  • A positive outlook with resilience and persistence in the face of barriers and setbacks.
