The International Day of Non–Violence to me reiterates the United Nations commitment to peace through education and poverty reduction. United Nations recognises that taking care of all vulnerable people will lead to non-violence. For this reason, the work of charities like SERVE and their partner organisations are essential in the promotion of non-violence across the globe.

The Global Goals or Sustainable Development Goals are an integral part of SERVE’s mission and I think they all contribute to the maintenance of non-violent mindsets. Goal number 16 of Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions as well as the UN Charter of Human Rights all contribute to the mission of non – violence.

In an ideal world, this day would come with worldwide ceasefires in areas of conflict, an increase in education, and an end to poverty.

In my role at SERVE, I hope to raise funds to allow our partners to continue their work. I also aim to encourage active citizenship in Ireland through education on cultures and countries that they may otherwise not have a chance to discover. I envision many interactive events to raise awareness of SERVE by creating genuine relationships with our public donors.

As Gandhi said, “Poverty is the worst form of violence,” so by fundraising for SERVE on behalf of our partner organisations, we can help with the poverty reduction in their communities therein contributing to non-violence.
