South Africa

SERVE work in the squatter camps close to Rustenburg city in the North West Province. It is an area ravaged by the HIV/AIDS pandemic. The local communities live in shockingly poor conditions and face a multiple of development challenges. The numerous squatter camps in this region are home to between 10,000 to 25,000 people per camp, many of them drawn to this region with the dream of landing a job in the local mining industry. The living conditions rob people of their dignity, helps HIV/AIDS to flourish, promotes a culture of survival sex and violence. Women and children suffer most, with many children orphaned because of the deadly HIV/AIDS disease.

SERVE’s partners in this region are Tapologo and Tsholofelo

Tapologo and Tsholofelo pioneer life changing programmes including:
• Outreach and Home Based Care Programmes
• Orphan and Vulnerable Children (OVC) Programmes
• Anti-retroviral Therapy (ART) Programmes
• In-patient Unit (IPU) and Hospice Care
• Skills based training for young people
• Skills based training for women
• Construction & renovation of health clinics
• Youth leadership training programmes
• Youth HIV/AIDS prevention work
• Early childhood education

SERVE volunteers will get to volunteer with and experience:

• Outreach and Home Based Care Programme

• Orphan and Vulnerable Children (OVC) Programme

• Anti-retroviral Therapy (ART) Programme

• In-patient Unit (IPU) and Hospice

SERVE volunteers have in the past worked on construction and renovation projects on the Tapologo campus and in the numerous squatter camps around Rustenburg. They have also facilitated creche programes for the young children attending the creches in the squatter camps, preparing classes, teaching the kids and preparing for a final presentation of the kids’ work

The work can often involve:

– Scrubbing down and painting large containers to be used as adult education facilities or as HIV clinics

– Working in a crèche

– Visiting patients in the Tapologo HIV/AIDS hospice

– Laying of pathways and construction of covered seating areas outside of the clinics
