A space designed for inclusion
SERVE and Scala are working together to develop a sensory garden at Scala, Castle Road, Blackrock, Cork.
The project will create an inclusive, accessible and calming outdoor space designed to support wellbeing, learning and community engagement for people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities.

Supporting young people and vulnerable adults
The garden will have a particular focus on young people aged 4 to 18, including those with additional needs or behavioural challenges.
Through sensory features and access to nature, the space aims to provide a safe environment where young people can regulate emotions, explore, learn and engage in positive play.
The garden will also support vulnerable adults, including people with intellectual disabilities, by providing a peaceful environment where they can feel grounded, connected and supported.
Access to nature should be for everyone
For families without access to a private garden or outdoor space, the sensory garden will provide an important shared environment within the local community.
Learning through participation
Young people are playing an active role in the development of the sensory garden. The project creates opportunities to contribute to a shared community space while learning more about accessibility, inclusion, sustainability and the value of thoughtful design.
