Supporting Education Through Nutrition

SERVE’s Feeding Programme in Mazabuka, Zambia

Background: A Community in Crisis

In Mazabuka, Zambia, long droughts have left many families struggling. With little food available, children often go to school hungry—or not at all. Hunger affects their ability to focus, stay awake, and perform well in class.

To help address this urgent problem, SERVE partnered with Assumption Parish. Together, they launched a Child Feeding Programme in three schools:

  • Luyobolola Basic School

  • St. Patrick’s Secondary School

  • Flamboyant Special School

How the Programme Works

With €3,300 in funding, SERVE provided meals to students over a three-month period. Each school day, children received at least one nutritious meal.

The programme was overseen by Milimo Muchanga, SERVE’s Partner Liaison. The goal was simple: reduce hunger, boost learning, and improve school attendance.

Real Results, Real Impact

The impact was clear and immediate:

  • 100% attendance at St. Patrick’s Secondary School for an entire term

  • Higher test scores, especially in Grades 9 and 12

  • Better focus and energy during lessons

  • Improved student health and well-being

  • Support for families, as some students took leftover food home

  • Stronger community bonds, thanks to shared mealtimes

A parent from Flamboyant Special School shared, “This programme has been a blessing. It’s not just about food; it’s about giving our children hope and a future.”
