Creating an Inclusive Sensory Garden at Scala
SERVE and Scala are working together to develop a sensory garden at Scala, Castle Road, Blackrock. Supported by the European Solidarity Corps, the project is focused on accessibility, wellbeing, inclusion and community.
The sensory garden is being developed as a calm and accessible outdoor space for young people, families, vulnerable adults and the wider Scala community.
The aim is to create a shared space where people can spend time in nature, take part in sensory learning and feel welcome.

The garden is beginning to take shape
Work has begun on preparing the garden space, including digging out the pathway and getting the area ready for the next stage of the build.
A group of volunteers are also coming together for a bigger build day, helping move the project forward over the coming weeks.

Adding colour to the space
Children from the Scala Summer Camp have helped paint the surrounding fence, bringing colour into the garden as work continues.
A space designed for inclusion
For children and young people, especially those with additional needs or behavioural challenges, sensory spaces can support positive play, emotional regulation and time spent in nature.
The garden will also support vulnerable adults and create a shared outdoor space for the local community.
Connected to wellbeing, learning and inclusion
The Scala Sensory Garden connects to the Sustainable Development Goals through its focus on wellbeing, education, reducing inequalities and partnership.
