From Sleeping in Cars to Building a Career

Bright’s Story

At just 21, Bright Dhamu has lived through challenges many would find unimaginable. After leaving his rural home in search of opportunity, he found himself sleeping in cars—or under the stars—at a garage near Mount Darwin. But his determination to learn and grow never wavered. Thanks to vocational training with Young Africa, supported by SERVE and Irish Aid, Bright’s life has taken a powerful turn. Today, he’s employed, independent, and supporting his family—proof that access to skills can open doors, even in the toughest of circumstances.

“I’m Bright Dhamu, and I’m 21 years old. A while ago, I used to stay at a garage near Mount Darwin growth point. I had left my rural home, which is quite far from there, because I was trying to find a way to make a living.

I couldn’t afford to rent a place. The garage became my home. If there was a car, I’d sleep inside it. If not, I’d sleep outside. It was tough, but I was determined to learn something – especially mechanics.

When I heard about the training at Young Africa, I didn’t think twice. I had been yearning for an opportunity like that—a proper chance to gain skills.

Now, after going through training, I’m earning. I secured a job at my Mastercrafts person’s place. I can pay rent, support my family back home, and help my siblings too.

Young Africa changed my life. I finally feel like I’m on the path I always dreamed of.”
