Building Skills, Building Futures

Bright’s Story

At SERVE and Young Africa’s Skills for Youth Resilience Programme (SYRP), we believe that every young person deserves the chance to shape their own future. Across communities, countless young people face daily challenges—yet, with the right opportunities, their resilience and determination shine through.

Bright Dhamu’s story is one of those inspiring journeys. From sleeping in a garage with nothing but a dream, to now building a life of dignity, independence, and hope, Bright shows us what happens when opportunity meets determination.

“I’m Bright Dhamu, and I’m 21 years old. A while ago, I used to stay at a garage near Mount Darwin growth point. I had left my rural home, which is quite far from there, because I was trying to find a way to make a living.

I couldn’t afford to rent a place. The garage became my home. If there was a car, I’d sleep inside it. If not, I’d sleep outside. It was tough, but I was determined to learn something – especially mechanics.

When I heard about the training at Young Africa, I didn’t think twice. I had been yearning for an opportunity like that—a proper chance to gain skills.

Now, after going through training, I’m earning. I secured a job at my Mastercrafts person’s place. I can pay rent, support my family back home, and help my siblings too.

Young Africa changed my life. I finally feel like I’m on the path I always dreamed of.”
