Strengthening Child Safeguarding in Zambia

SERVE Funds Three-Day Teacher Training in Mazabuka

Keeping children safe is fundamental to quality education. In December 2025, SERVE funded and supported a three-day safeguarding training programme for teachers and school-based educators in Mazabuka, Zambia. This training was delivered by Bosco Youth Reach Out, a local organisation with specialist safeguarding and child protection expertise, contracted by SERVE to support our partner schools in Mazabuka.

Why Safeguarding Matters

Schools play a critical role in protecting children. Teachers are often the first people to notice when something is wrong, yet many receive little formal training on identifying abuse, maintaining professional boundaries, or responding appropriately when concerns arise.

The training responded directly to these needs, helping to embed safeguarding into everyday teaching practice and school culture.

What the Training Covered

Over three days, participants explored:

• Indicators of abuse, neglect, and exploitation

• Children’s rights and child development

• Positive and non‑violent discipline

• Professional ethics and boundaries

• Responding to and reporting disclosures

• Digital safeguarding in modern classrooms

• School-based safeguarding action planning

Educators also took part in practical exercises such as mapping risks within school environments and designing clear procedures to support safe and accountable systems.

Why Safeguarding Matters

Teachers reported increased confidence in recognising safeguarding concerns and greater clarity about their responsibilities in responding appropriately. Participating schools have begun drafting safeguarding action plans, reinforcing long-term structures that protect children both inside and outside the classroom.

By strengthening teacher capacity, this training supports hundreds of children across SERVE’s partner schools in Mazabuka. It contributes to creating learning environments where children feel safe, respected, and empowered.

SERVE’s Commitment

This initiative reflects SERVE’s commitment to strengthening education systems and upholding children’s rights across our partner communities. By engaging local experts like Bosco Youth Reach Out, we help ensure that training is relevant, culturally grounded, and sustainable.
