Edwell’s Journey of Transformation

From Unemployment to Entrepreneur: How Skills Training Changed His Life

At 28 years old, Edwell Masarakura stands as a skilled carpenter, entrepreneur, and proud provider for his family. But his path wasn’t always clear.

Once caught in a cycle of unemployment and uncertainty, Edwell’s life changed when he enrolled in Young Africa’s vocational training programme in Mount Darwin—where he gained skills in Carpentry, Life Skills, and Entrepreneurship. Today, Edwell dreams big: to build a company even larger than Teecherz and mentor other young people to realize the value of their own hands

Finding Purpose and Direction

“Before joining Young Africa, my life had no clear path. I had dreams, but no direction. I wanted to study a vocational course, but my family couldn’t afford to support me further. I depended heavily on my brothers, and the weight of that helplessness was crushing.”

Seeing peers building futures through skills inspired Edwell. He wanted to be someone who could give back – not just receive.

“When I heard about Young Africa, I didn’t hesitate. I grabbed the opportunity. And it changed everything.”

More Than Just Carpentry

At Young Africa, Edwell’s education went beyond tools and techniques. Life Skills classes taught him responsibility, respect, and how to protect his future and relationships.

“In Entrepreneurship, I learnt how to build more than furniture – I learnt how to build a life with multiple income streams.”

Now employed as a carpenter and running a side business making and selling liquid soap, Edwell has also started sending three younger siblings to school—a full-circle moment of transformation.

Dreaming Big and Giving Back

“My biggest dream is to build a company bigger than Teecherz and to become an MC and mentor for young people like myself. I want to train others, just as I was trained.”

“In Entrepreneurship, I learnt how to build more than furniture – I learnt how to build a life with multiple income streams.”

To young people everywhere, Edwell’s message is clear: “Invest in your hands. Skills are transformative.”

And to Young Africa, he says: “Thank you for coming to Mt Darwin. I am no longer a burden. I am now a breadwinner.”
