A Future Stitched on Her Own Terms

Generosa da Conceição | Mozambique

Generosa working in her sewing workshop in Mozambique

Generosa da Conceição wanted to earn enough to support her family. Without a specific skill, stable work or money to invest in a business, her choices were limited.

She began buying and reselling basic goods such as onions and garlic on the street. It was honest work, but the informal market was unpredictable and fiercely competitive.

Without sufficient capital or business guidance, she struggled to make it sustainable.

“It doesn’t matter your age, and it doesn’t matter how much time has passed. I am the example of this. Have courage, because forward is the path.”

Learning a new skill

Generosa received a SERVE scholarship to study Cutting and Sewing at Young Africa.

The opportunity opened a new path, but learning the skill was not easy. Pattern drafting and operating the sewing machines initially felt overwhelming.

At times, she questioned whether she would be able to complete the course. She kept going.

In 2024, Generosa graduated. By 2025, she had begun turning her training into a business of her own.

Building a livelihood

From training to a business of her own

Today, Generosa works from a home-based sewing workshop, producing school uniforms and custom-made garments for people in her community.

Her workspace is now filled with fabric, sewing machines and customer orders, the visible results of a skill she once feared she might never master.

Challenging expectations

Her business has also challenged assumptions about the work women can do.

In an environment where professional garment production is often seen as men’s work, Generosa has shown that a woman can build and lead a successful tailoring enterprise.

The income she earns helps cover daily household expenses and her children’s school registration fees.

During a period of rising living costs, the business gives her family greater stability and gives Generosa something she did not have before: a livelihood she can shape herself.

Confidence beyond the workshop

Generosa’s training also included life skills, gender equality, self-care and sexual and reproductive health education.

She says this knowledge has strengthened her confidence and helped her make informed decisions to protect her health, including preventing HIV.

Looking ahead

Generosa now wants to expand her workshop and eventually employ other women who are struggling to find stable opportunities. She began by selling what she could to survive. Today, she is creating something of her own, one uniform, one customer and one carefully made garment at a time.

Building Futures Through Opportunity

Generosa’s story reflects the wider impact of the Skills for Youth Resilience Programme. When people are supported not only to learn practical skills, but also to build the confidence and knowledge needed to use them, new opportunities can take shape.

Through collaboration between SERVE and Young Africa Mozambique, participants can develop skills that support livelihoods, strengthen families and create more resilient futures.

This is sustainable development in action: practical, local and shaped by the people building their own future.
