SERVE Recruiting Construction Volunteers for South Africa, (7th July – 6th August)
SERVE is currently looking for volunteers with some experience in construction to work with us for four weeks (7th July – 6th August) on our volunteer project in South Africa. SERVE works in the squatter camps close to Rustenburg city in the North West Province. The local communities live in shockingly poor conditions and face a multiple of development challenges. The numerous squatter camps in this region are home to between 10,000 to 25,000 people per camp, many of them drawn to this region with the dream of landing a job in the local mining industry. The living conditions rob people of their dignity.
SERVE volunteers have in the past worked on construction and renovation projects on the Tapologo campus and in the numerous squatter camps around Rustenburg. Other volunteers have also facilitated creche programes for the young children attending the creches in the squatter camps, preparing classes, teaching the kids and preparing for a final presentation of the kids’ work.
The work can often involve:
– Scrubbing down and painting large containers to be used as adult education facilities or as HIV clinics
– Laying of pathways and construction of covered seating areas outside of the clinics
– Construction of playgrounds
You can find some more information about our volunteer projects here and get further information about the costs of the programme and the fundraising required etc.:
If you are interested in applying, the process we undertake with all of our applicants is to make a presentation of our programme, which takes about 25 minutes and then undertake a 30 minute interview. In this way it gives you a full picture of the programme you are signing up for and gives you the chance to ask some questions.
Please contact david@serve.ie if you want to discuss this further.
