Mozambique (Beira)
SERVE have been working with Young Africa in Mozambique since 2007 and given the mutual focus on tackling youth poverty, there is a natural fit between the two organisations.
• Young Africa campus, Beira
Young Africa have been working in Beira, Mozambique since 2004, when they were invited to work there by the Mozambiquan Ambassador to Zimbabwe, who witnessed Young Africa in operation in Zimbabwe. In partnership with the local community, Young Africa has developed a Skills Training Centre in Beira which is providing education, practical skills training and life skills training to 800 young people between the age of 15-24. Young Africa operates on a Franchise Concept which allows local business people to use Young Africa facilities and equipment, whilst providing skills training for young people.
In Manga – Beira, on a plot of land donated by the Municipality of Beira, Young Africa offer non-formal skills training in about 10 different market-oriented trades, teachers training; academic coaching classes for school drop-outs, run a hostel programme for orphan girls, have micro-credit facilities, organise annually awareness festivals and offer community services as a sports, games, arts, library, internet café, crèche and adult literacy classes.
• YAgri-Tech, Dondo
On the 11th of November 2010, the first grounds job was done to make a YAgri-Tech in Dondo a reality: a bulldozer cleared a pathway to the 200 ha. of land offered by the Municipality of Dondo. The idea of the YAgri-Tech centres in Zimbabwe and Mozambique is to train young people in agriculture and agriculture-related skills.
SERVE volunteers in the past have been involved in the construction of a créche and a volunteer residential block, the renovation of study huts and the construction of a chicken coop on the YA campus in Beira. They have also assisted with the running of festivals (World Cup and Sports festivals). In Dondo they have also been involved in making classroom tables and benches and refurbishing and painting classrooms, and also running a sports festival for the young people of Dondo. As the development of the YAgri-Tech progresses in Dondo SERVE volunteers will continue to be involved in construction and refurbishment projects and community development projects.

Mozambique (Maputo & Muvamba)
SERVE supports projects in Maputo (the capital city) and a rural area called Muvamba in the province of Inhambane. Our partners are the Xipamanine Mission in Maputo and the Muvamba Mission which is 80km north of Massinga in Inhambane Province.
Xipamanine is an impoverished community in the heart of Maputo and is adjacent to the poor people’s market. It is a community challenged by unemployment, violence, drugs and gender inequality. Local community leaders worry enormously about the future for their children and young people. Our partners in Xipamanine are committed to working with young people and developing the local community to become the agents of their own transformation.
Muvamba is a rural mission with over 50 communities and is home to a dispersed population of 50,000 people. Primary school education has a history of only one to three years in some of these local communities. Mothers have to walk long distances for health care and maternity care. Young girls have to walk up to 13km each way to fetch water. The lack of easy access to water leads to ill health and skin disease. Secondary school is often not a viable option for young people and especially girls who are often denied basic human and educational rights. A challenge of having a HIV/AIDS free generation of young people is amongst one of the key priorities identified by the local communities in Muvamba. Literacy programmes and human rights work especially around the dignity and rights of women are key project activities implemented by our partners as the mobile team visits and works in each of these dispersed communities. The poor quality of teaching and the dispersed rural primary community schools is also a significant challenge.
SERVE volunteers in the past have been in partnership with Xipamanine Mission and Muvamba Mission and committed themselves to the:
• Construction of a women’s community centre in the Xipamanine slum community in Maputo
• Construction of a maternity resting house for pregnant women in Muvamba
• Promoting the dignity and equality of women in the Muvamba area so as to reduce the rate of gender violence
• Provision of water resources in eight communities in Muvamba in partnership with the Redemptorists and funding support from Misean Cara
• Enhancement of IT skills to boost disadvantaged youth employment prospects in the Xipamanine slum community
• To build a secondary school at Unguane in the Muvamba Mission
• To build a kitchen, study and sanitary area for the young students living in informal settlements adjacent to the Muvamba secondary school
• To continue to roll out access to primary school education in each of the dispersed rural communities
• A capacity building training programme for 135 teachers in the Muvamba area
• Youth outreach and leadership training programme in Xipamanine and Muvamba with a HIV/AIDS prevention focus.
